Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate and lay pipe using a pipe layerThis unit applies to those working in site based roles.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors, and must be sourced from state jurisdictions prior to applying this unit.This unit alone does not provide sufficient skill to independently load and unload equipment. To perform this activity safely, personnel must either complete or be assisted by someone who has completed RIIHAN308F Load and Unload Plant or equivalent.

Element: Plan and prepare for pipe layer operations
  • Access, interpret and apply pipe layer operations documentation
  • Obtain, interpret clarify and confirm work instructions
  • Identify hazards and environmental issues, assess the risks and implement control measures
  • Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
  • Identify, obtain and implement traffic management signage according to workplace procedures
  • Select equipment and/or attachments and confirm suitability for work activities
  • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures for pipe layer, and be prepared for fires, accidents and emergencies
  • Coordinate and communicate planned activities with others at the site prior to commencement of work activity

  • Carry out equipment prestart and start-up checks in line with workplace procedures
  • Identify faults or defects and rectify or report within scope of own responsibility and according to workplace procedures
  • Drive and operate using pipe layer techniques suited to equipment capabilities, site and work conditions, and according to workplace procedures
  • Monitor hazards and risks during operations, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
  • Monitor and manage equipment performance using indicators and alarms
       
Element: Attach, carry and place pipe to complete work activity
  • Establish weight of load and ensure it is within safe operational limits of the machine
  • Position machinery to ensure stable and effective shift of materials according to work requirements
  • Use lifting gear within safe working load requirements and in line with workplace procedures
  • Shift pipe and place safely, using hand, audible and communication signals, in line with workplace procedures
  • Park up, shut down, secure and carry out post operational inspection of equipment in line with workplace procedures

  • Prepare pipe layer for relocation
  • Move pipe layer safely between worksites, observing relevant codes and traffic management requirements
  • Assist loading and unloading machine from float/trailer in line with workplace procedures
       
Element: Conduct housekeeping activities
  • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to workplace procedures
  • Manage and/or report hazards to maintain a safe working environment
  • Complete and file or distribute documentation

Assessment Tasks
